Terrestrial plant productivity and soil moisture constraints

چکیده
Croplands cover 12% of the ice-free land surface and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Light use efficiency (LUE) models have often been employed to estimate the exchange of CO2 between croplands and the atmosphere. A key parameter in these models is the maximum light use efficiency ( *NPP), but estimates of *NPP vary by at least a factor 2. Here we used 12 agricultural eddy-flux measurement sites in North America and Europe to constrain LUE models in general and *NPP in particular. We found that LUE models could explain on average about 70% of the variability in net ecosystem exchange (NEE) when we increased the *NPP from 0.5 to 0.65-2.0g C per MJ Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR). Our results imply that croplands are more important in the global carbon budget than often thought. In addition, inverse modelling approaches that utilize LUE model outputs as a-priori input may have to be revisited in areas where croplands are an important contributor to regional carbon fluxes.

Climate change alters stoichiometry of phosphorus and nitrogen in a semiarid grassland.
Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are essential nutrients for primary producers and decomposers in terrestrial ecosystems. Although climate change affects terrestrial N cycling with important feedbacks to plant productivity and carbon sequestration, the impacts of climate change on the relative availability of N with respect to P remain highly uncertain. In a semiarid grassland in Wyoming, USA, w...

Net ecosystem productivity of carbon (NEP) in seasonally dry forests of the Amazon varies greatly between sites with similar precipitation patterns. Correctly modeling the NEP seasonality with terrestrial ecosystem models has proven difficult. Previous modelling studies have mostly advocated for incorporating processes that act to reduce water stress on gross primary productivity (GPP) during t...
متن کاملUnderstanding moisture stress on light use efficiency across terrestrial ecosystems based on global flux and remote-sensing data
Light use efficiency (LUE) is a key biophysical parameter characterizing the ability of plants to convert absorbed light to carbohydrate. However, the environmental regulations on LUE, especially moisture stress, are poorly understood, leading to large uncertainties in primary productivity estimated by LUE models. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of moisture stress on L...
متن کاملA global model of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles for the terrestrial biosphere
Carbon storage by many terrestrial ecosystems can be limited by nutrients, predominantly nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), in addition to other environmental constraints, water, light and temperature. However the spatial distribution and the extent of both N and P limitation at the global scale have not been quantified. Here we have developed a global model of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosph...
متن کاملGlobal Analysis of Bioclimatic Controls on Ecosystem Productivity Using Satellite Observations of Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence
Ecosystem productivity models rely on regional climatic information to estimate temperature and moisture constraints influencing plant growth. However, the productivity response to these environmental factors is uncertain at the global scale and has largely been defined using limited observations from sparse monitoring sites, including carbon flux towers. Recent studies have shown that satellit...

The NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission Level 4 Carbon (L4_C) product provides model estimates of Net Ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) incorporating SMAP soil moisture information as a primary driver. The L4_C product provides NEE, computed as total respiration less gross photosynthesis, at a daily time step and approximate 14-day latency posted to a 9-km global grid summarized by plan...
